note: This section is not particularly detailed, I'm mostly going over his abilities on a macro level. Otherwise things would get ridiculous.
Naruto is a shinobi, a person trained in ninpou, or the ninja arts. Shinobi are capable of casting magic spells, commonly referred to as jutsu, by molding an energy known as chakra from the proper balance of life force, or stamina, and spiritual energy. Naruto possesses a uniquely strong ability to produce large amounts of chakra.
Naruto possesses three kinds of chakra to utilize. He can use his own normal chakra, he can use Sage chakra, which is gathered from the life force of nature around him (and which allows him to sense others auras and life energy when in use), and lastly, Naruto can use Kyuubi chakra, or the chakra of Kurama, which is far greater than his own and which boosts his healing speed greatly, as well as Naruto's natural empathy.
The arts in which a shinobi can apply this chakra are as follows:
Ninjutsu: Ninja techniques. Spells formed by reciting an incantation and forming a series of hand seals. Ninjutsu can be performed wordlessly and without seals but are more difficult to control and predict this way. Some of Naruto's signature jutsu are henge jutsu, which transform him into something else, such as a woman or a weapon, and kagebunshin no jutsu, which allows him to create from one to a thousand clones of himself (risk being that his life energy is split evenly between the clones). Naruto's jutsu most commonly include the following: spatial manipulation, enabling Naruto to create a spiralling shape to his chakra, and elemental manipulation, which allows him to manipulate the fuuton, or wind, element with his chakra.
Taijutsu: The ability to pound chakra into a part of the body to increase physical speed, strength and durability. Naruto normally has little skill with taijutsu.
Genjutsu: The ability to create illusions using one's chakra to manipulate the chakra in another person's body and mind. Naruto is incapable of casting genjutsu.
Senjutsu: Sage techniques, those techniques cast with Sage chakra. Sage chakra is gathered by meditation while completely still, from the life energy of the earth and nature itself. Naruto can use senjutsu to approximate taijutsu, enabling him to be superiorly strong, fast, and durable.
Summoning: Naruto has a summoning contract with the Great Toads. In Darrow, because the toads are still back in Naruto's universe, he is only capable of summoning one, a small messenger frog he had swallowed, though it will get bigger over the years.
Chakra Cloak: Naruto is able to utilize the Kyuubi chakra in order to meld it with another person's chakra, so that it creates a cloak around them which protects them. If that person can manipulate life energy, they can use this chakra in addition to their own. The Chakra Cloak is also used by Naruto in order to transform himself into the form of Kurama, and also to protect himself normally as with others. When finely controlled, the Chakra Cloak takes on the form of an actual cloak, a long, collared jacket.
Chakra Meld: Naruto can meld his chakra with another individual's in order to get an idea of their emotional state, and sometimes visions of their past from their memory, if they are feeling strongly about a particular memory. Melding chakra increases Naruto's naturally existing empathetic abilities. He has also, seldomly, seen a vision of the future in such circumstances, though this seems to be linked solely to his status as part of a greater prophecy.
Tell us about your character's background:
UZUMAKI NARUTO:
The Great Toad Sage told the prophet Jiraiya that one day he would travel the world, and write a book, and that he would one day have a disciple, and that that disciple would be the Child of Prophecy. The Child of Prophecy would start a Revolution, which would either bring peace to the world or destroy it utterly.
Years later, the current Hokage, the leader of the Village Hidden In The Leaves, would defend the village of shinobi against the attack of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox. Losing his life during the battle that day, Minato would split the Nine-Tails in two, sealing half within himself before dying, and the other half in his newborn son, Naruto.
Naruto grew up parentless and friendless, because the villagers believed he was cursed as the vessel of the Nine-Tails. Naruto, filled with loneliness and resentment, would become a problem child. But he had a hope within him that would not extinguish, and he gradually collected more and more family and friends of his own making as he aged. He would be teamed with lifelong companion Sakura and lifelong foil Sasuke, and his mentor, Kakashi, to form Team 7. He would become a shinobi himself, with Hokage as his goal, eventually earning an apprenticeship under Jiraiya who would teach him how to better control the powers of the Nine-Tails.
Returning to his village years later with the skills given him by Jiraiya, Naruto would defend himself and others against Akatsuki, an organization hunting for the 'tailed beasts' in order to use them as a weapon to destroy civilization.
Naruto would eventually make a relationship with Kurama inside of him, and discover that Akatsuki are led by a man named Tobi, who's goal is not just to destroy civilization, but to summon the Juubi, or Ten-Tails, which will create a spell which will reflect off of the surface of the moon, putting every human being on the planet under the grip of an illusion of absolute peace and harmony, a fake utopia inside a dream. The prophecy, it would seem, is correct in the end. It is Naruto's destiny to lead the people of the world to stop the Infinite Tsukuyomi from being cast, uniting all of the warring world under the banner of an honest, true peace, and not the peace of a never-ending dream-world.
KURAMA:
In the beginning, there was the Shinju, a lotus flower that bloomed once a millenium and created a single fruit. Humans were forbidden to consume the fruit, but Kaguya did, becoming the first human to have knowledge of chakra. The Shinju, wanting its fruit back, would transform into a great god, the Ten-Tails. Kaguya would bear a son, Hagoromo, who would become the Sage of The Six Paths, and eventually defeat the Ten-Tails to split its chakra into nine pieces and seal its body into the moon.
The ninth piece would become the Great Demon Fox Kurama, and Kurama and his origins would fall into myth and legend. But at the end of ages, humans would appear that could control the Bijuu, or Tailed Beasts, and Kurama would find himself a bargaining chip for humanity, a weapon of mass destruction in order to keep the peace when trust failed, replacing that trust with mutual fear.
Kurama found himself in the possession of the Fire Country, sealed first into Uzumaki Mito as his vessel, and subsequently Uzumaki Kushina; however, he would be ripped out of Kushina by Tobi, who would become the leader of Akatsuki. The stress of having the powerful demon ripped from her would cause Kushina to die, but before she would, she and her husband, Minato, would plan to seal Kurama into their newborn son, Uzumaki Naruto.
Kurama would watch Naruto grow and struggle, impressed by his determination, and also, though it would be some time before he would admit it, Naruto's boundless capacity for love and understanding. After a promise by Naruto to one day remove all of the hate from Kurama, the two would eventually reach a detente, and even a budding friendship.
Naruto arrives from Naruto #653, I See It Clearly.
Your character's personality:
Naruto is once referred to as the Personification of Light, the one who holds the flower called 'Hope.' He is warmth and brightness. He is also, however, in the words of a friend, 'kind of a dimwit, and a scatter-brain, and a little clumsy, and an asshole, and cheap, and perverted, and greedy, and egotistical, and oblivious, and a dork.'
But mostly, he's the Number One Ninja At Surprising People.
To be perfectly upfront, he's not exactly the sharpest shuriken in the pouch. He lacks book-smarts and has little in the way of common sense, but you would be hard-pressed to call him an idiot. Startlingly perceptive, he's a keen people watcher, and often has insights into other people's words and actions that others do not, in large part precisely because of growing up an outside, always looking in on others rather than being with them. At the end of the day, he can fix the problem. He won't always be able to tell you how it works, but he knows what works.
If asked to describe himself, though, despite his boastful egotism, he is pragmatic and full of doubts. 'Kind of stupid, you may have noticed,' he would say, and 'not even that good of a ninja.' Which isn't incorrect, but not necessarily the truth, either. Naruto's nindo, his Way of the Ninja, is to never give up, and never go back on his word. It is to never let a comrade die, and to never sit back and do nothing while others are working hard to protect something. The very idea of someone fighting for something alone is anathema to him, and he's sworn it as a personal goal to try to understand everyone that he meets. To understand them, forgive them, and surrender his hate.
It hasn't been easy, giving up all of that hate and resentment. But he's managed because other people believed in him, and that belief has been power enough to put on a smile and a cheerful demeanor.
In the end, Naruto has managed to go from boasting prankster, a lonely and resentful child starved for attention and hovering dangerously on the edge of something far worse, to all-uniting hero, deserving of the acknowledgment that he had once craved.
KURAMA:
At one point describing himself as "a living mass of malevolence," the truth is ... a little more complicated. He's cunning as hell, you know, like a fox. And of course, more than a little sadistic (though even Kurama has his standards). But the truth is, though immeasurably older, Kurama has felt the same empty loneliness, the same resentful hatred, as Naruto.
All along, he's wanted to be treated as a living being, with his own sovereignty and emotions, instead of a prisoner and a pawn.
Naruto gave Kurama mutual understanding and respect, and in return Kurama has given Naruto his cooperation. He might not be very good at it, but once in his life, he was a caring friend of Hagoromo, and he's trying, again, to find for himself that kind of companionship and acknowledgment again.
